If I were a better librarian, I think I’d be more like my dog, Chief. Let me qualify that. It’s not that I wish I were obsessed with rabbits or think wistfully of having a tail to wag, but he does have characteristics that could benefit me if I emulated them.

Incorporate Seasonal Employees and Volunteers for Efficient Library Staffing
It is the leader’s responsibility to guide the organizational conversation to improve its internal and external performance. This means that when you speak with an employee he/she should be able to tell you the mission, strategy, and goals of the library and be able to talk about their role within the organization. Surely you’ve heard the story of the NASA janitor who said his job was to “send people to the moon.” Everyone has a role, and the intentionality of a conversation can lead to real breakthroughs. How can we be intentional in our conversations at work?
I was inspired to share her talk with my staff. So I showed a video of a version of the talk that she had posted online during my monthly staff meeting and I shared an example of a program that two staff members had tried for a year, recently deciding that it wasn’t working and to end it. We all applauded their beautiful failure. I encouraged everyone to bring ideas to their co-workers, department heads or me and we could discuss running with them.
I’m afraid I have some bad news for the library community. Collectively we are suffering from a rampant case of atychiphobia: a persistent fear of failure. Its primary indicator is “a reluctance to try new things or get involved in challenging projects.” Symptoms may also include anxiety, procrastination, feet dragging, low confidence, and/or debilitating perfectionism.
