From Displays to DIY: Practical Inspiration from the How-To Stage at PLA 2026
Every conference day included time in the Exhibits Hall, with a regular stop at the How-To Stage. In a role supporting adult librarians in designing engaging reader programs—through training, funding, and online resources—the session How To Create Engaging Book Displays That Connect with Your Community immediately stood out.
Led by Stacy Lienemann, Director of the Waseca-Le Sueur Regional Library System, the session showcased a series of innovative display ideas designed not only to promote collections but to actively engage patrons. Examples ranged from a Taylor Swift–themed “take-a-lyric” station to author-themed reading gardens and character-inspired recommendation displays. These displays encouraged interaction, sparked conversations, and created opportunities for readers’ advisory engagement.
One standout idea featured genre-themed “baseball cards” with staff-selected recommendations. Each card defined a sub-genre—such as “Cozy Mysteries” or “Domestic Thrillers”—on one side, with curated book suggestions on the reverse. This simple, low-commitment, grab-and-go format offers an accessible way for busy adults to discover new titles. Other highlights included a quote-based “fortune” display and an environmental display featuring a county map. The session underscored how thoughtful, interactive displays can increase both circulation and patron engagement.
A return to the How-To Stage later in the conference brought another valuable session: How To Lead Arts & Crafts Programs (Even if You’re Not Creative), presented by Tisa Ott from Penn Hills Library. The session reframed the librarian’s role in craft programming as a facilitator rather than an instructor—an empowering perspective that emphasizes designing inclusive, flexible spaces for participation.
Practical tips included incorporating low-cost, accessible materials, such as adaptive scissors to support patrons with varying mobility needs. The session also introduced felting as a programming option, opening the door to new creative possibilities. Conversations with fellow attendees continued after the session, reinforcing how effective programs extend beyond the presentation itself and foster ongoing dialogue.
